Donald Trump said the US federal government will shut down if the debt ceiling is not eliminated or extended, ABC News journalist Jonathan Karl said in a post on X, citing comments from a conversation with the president-elect.
“If we don’t get it, then we’re going to have a shutdown, but it’ll be a Biden shutdown, because shutdowns only inure to the person who’s president,” Trump told ABC.
Trump effectively killed House Speaker Mike Johnson’s original stopgap plan to fund the government through March 14 and called for an approach that includes raising the debt ceiling.
